About Biennale Pulse
Methodology, standards, and how we keep ourselves honest
What Biennale Pulse Is
Biennale Pulse is the living, breathing pulse of the art world — a trend-spotting publication that captures what's rising, what's fading, and what's about to break. It is not a directory. It is not a content engine. It is the front-of-house magazine that makes data feel alive, human, and urgent.
Think New York Magazine covering the art world. Vulture's wit applied to biennales. Smart, visual, occasionally wry, never snarky about artists themselves — the wryness is aimed at the circus, not the performers.
The Four-Property Ecosystem
- Biennale 100 (biennale.com/biennale-100) — The historical survey of influence, 2015–2025. A time-stamped editorial survey, not a current ranking.
- Biennale Radar — The sensor network. RSS ingestion, source management, content engine.
- Biennale Pulse — THIS. The live cultural instrument panel. Editorial analysis, signal detection, pulse scoring.
- myBiennale (my.biennale.com) — The user cockpit. Guides, calendar, event pages.
Scoring Methodology
Every signal, trend, person, and city carries a composite Pulse Score (0–100), built from three sub-scores:
Momentum
50%How fast is this growing? Source diversity, acceleration, biennale connection, editorial boost.
Credibility
30%How reliable is the source trail? Tier-1 sources, primary sources, independent confirmation, verifiable URLs.
Novelty
20%Is this actually new? First signal in 90+ days, new city on heatmap, trend graduation, dedup penalty.
Composite = (Momentum × 0.5) + (Credibility × 0.3) + (Novelty × 0.2)
Cap: 99. All raw numbers are rounded. Confidence labels shown alongside scores.

The Biennale 100 Vintage
B100 is a time-stamped editorial survey covering the 2015–2025 decade. We use it as a branded reference layer, seed corpus, and authority snapshot — not as a permanent current ranking.
Display convention: B100 membership is shown like a vintage — "B100, Class of 2015–2025" — so it reads as canon and provenance, never as a current endorsement.
Authority decay: B100 authority weight decays slowly — full weight in year 1 (2026), 90% in year 2, 80% in year 3, down to 60% by year 5. This ensures canon status functions as a diminishing prior, not a permanent boost. A non-B100 artist with strong current activity can and should outrank a B100 figure on The Board.
Anti-Echo-Chamber Protocol
Hard Gates (Non-Negotiable)
- Trend Graduation Rule: No trend graduates from "watching" to "emerging" unless supported by ≥3 independent source types. Structural, not editorial.
- Counter-Read Rule: Any signal or trend hitting 85+ triggers an active search for a dissenting or complicating view. Found → linked. Not found → flagged "uncontested."
- BR Provenance Rule: Biennale Radar feed items can inform BP signals but never satisfy the corroboration requirement. Internal sourcing doesn't count.
- B10 Independence Rule: B10 Art Critics are our own selections — they sit on the bench but can't be its majority. The live bench provides independence.
Soft Mechanisms
- Source diversity metric per entity — narrow sourcing is flagged.
- Self-questioning workflow: "Is this rising because it's truly rising, or because our sources over-represent it?"
- Every signal shows source type. Readers see provenance.
- Monthly digest includes an outside read — independent voice, including dissent.
Editorial Standards
- Voice: intelligent but not academic, opinionated but not reckless, data-informed but human-written.
- Short-form is a craft: 150-word items should be better written than 1,500-word pieces elsewhere.
- Every factual claim traceable to a credible source.
- Image credits are a hard block, not a guideline. No publish without credit line.
- Brief attributed quotes only — a sentence, not a paragraph — always credited and linked.
- "Biennales" never "biennials" (except proper names — Whitney Biennial stays).
- Relative time in evergreen copy over hard year-stamps.
- Geographic and thematic balance as an active editorial value.
Correction Policy
Corrections are visible, prompt, and dated. When we get something wrong, we say so clearly and fix it publicly. The correction log is part of the methodology page. Transparency is the reputation strategy.
